Itron said the deployment of sensors and software-as-a-service will allow the city of Pearland to improve delivery of water to the city’s 120,000 customers
U.S. firm Itron, a technology company that specializes in products and services for energy and water resource management, will install its OpenWay Riva IoT solution for water and leak sensors for the city of Pearland, in Texas.
The company said that the deployment of this IoT-based solution will help reduce water loss and improve delivery of water to the city’s 120,000 customers. Itron also highlighted that the local utility will also take advantage of Itron Analytics, a software-as-a-service offering that collects and analyzes data in the network to improve operational awareness.
To increase metering accuracy, improve customer service and provide better water consumption data, the city of Pearland will replace its existing Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system with 37,000 Itron OpenWay Riva water communication modules and leak sensors.
As a part of the contract, Itron will install endpoints, routers and provide overall project management.
“With Itron’s OpenWay Riva solution, we can leverage real-time data analysis to detect water loss, engage with customers and improve meter reading,” said Robert Upton, director of engineering and capital projects for the city of Pearland. “We are excited to update our infrastructure with Itron’s solution, which will also enable us to adopt smart city technology in the future.”
“Using our OpenWay Riva solution, leak detection and analytics, the city of Pearland will be able to proactively detect leaks and empower customers to conserve water,” said Gavin Van Tonder, president of water at Itron.
Last month, Itron said it was working with the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) to help the utility minimize water loss throughout the island.
Itron, through its regional distributor Innotech Utilities, will replace the utility’s existing mechanical water meters with Itron’s Intelis water meters to better monitor water usage.
By replacing its old meters with Itron’s ultrasonic water meters, BWA will be enabled to improve operations, detect leaks, monitor system performance and improve water efficiency.
The meters are equipped with advanced monitoring intelligence, which will alert the utility to potential problems such as tampering and abnormal or drops in water pressure.
“As the sole supplier of potable water to the public of Barbados, we recognized the need to develop a program that would prevent water loss and quickly detect leaks,” said Keithroy Halliday, general manager, BWA. “With Itron’s ultrasonic water meters, we will be able to accurately measure actual consumption and detect leaks for years to come.”
