Cubic Telecom inks connected car deal with Škoda

Škoda drivers will have access to a wide range of connected cars services across Europe

Cubic Telecom has signed a contract with Czech automobile manufacturer Škoda Auto to enable connectivity for Škoda drivers across Europe.

The new IoT solution will be available first in the new Scala and Kamiq models later this year, followed by other Škoda models, Cubic Telecom said.

Škoda drivers will have access to connected services powered through Cubic Telecom’s PACE Platform. Connected services include telematics, e-Call, infotainment apps and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, which can connect up to 8 devices at once.

Through Cubic’s eSIM solution global subscription management secure routing (SM-SR) services will be enabled across Europe, where Škoda Connect is available.

Barry Napier, Cubic Telecom CEO, said that Cubic “is now part of Škoda’s strategy to incorporate seamless and secure connectivity into its customers’ daily journeys. This partnership represents Cubic’s further expansion into the Volkswagen Group as a trusted global connectivity partner.”

Škoda drivers will have access to secure information and entertainment integrated with the Škoda virtual cockpit, accessing navigation, route guidance and mapping, as well as personal apps.

“Cars are undergoing a technological transformation, with drivers now expecting connectivity as a natural part of the product offering. By partnering with Cubic Telecom, we are proving our determination at Škoda to deliver high-quality innovative solutions to our customers, keeping Škoda drivers securely online with high speed LTE connectivity, advanced safety features, real-time information, and in-car entertainment,” said Martin Sodomka, Connected Car Project Lead at Škoda.

In related news, Cubic Telecom also announced a collaboration with Microsoft on its Microsoft Connected Vehicle Platform (MCVP).

Cubic Telecom said it will be the first connectivity provider as a core service offering to MCVP for a global market. MCVP is a set of services built on Microsoft Azure designed to empower the automotive industry to create customer connected driving experiences.

Cubic Telecom’s core network spans more than 180 countries and over 65 mobile operator partnerships, with over 2 million drivers already using Cubic’s connected car solution.

“As global car manufacturers undertake to digitally transform their businesses, they are fuelled not just to achieve improved economies of scale, but rather to meet the scalability requirements for application processing, performance, storage, security and software updates. Our PACE Platform continuously demonstrates the ability to scale open interfaces and flexible workflow operations,” said Cubic’s Napier, adding, “The collaboration between Cubic PACE, MCVP and Volkswagen is a prime example of digital innovation, and we are proud to be chosen as the first global connectivity provider for MCVP.”
