Motorola Solutions acquires VoIP dispatch provider Avtec

Motorola Solutions continues to expand public safety services and software portfolio

In its second recent acquisition, Motorola Solutions is picking up voice-over-IP dispatch provider Avtec for an undisclosed sum.

South Carolina-based Avtec offers “business critical” VoIP dispatch services over both Land Mobile Radio and broadband networks; it had a long-standing existing partner relationship with Motorola Solutions. Its customers include airlines, energy companies and railroads, according to Motorola Solutions. Motorola’s corporate VP for infrastructure and systems, John Kedierski, said that the acquisition allows his company to “offer an end-to-end platform for customers to communicate, coordinate resources and secure their facilities. As part of our portfolio, Avtec will continue to offer dispatch solutions for a number of radio network vendors so its customers and channel partners can maximize their integration options.”

In January, Motorola Solutions bought video analysis-as-a-service company VaaS International for $445 million in cash and equity. VaaS’ platform for image capture and analysis supported fixed and mobile cameras for automated license plate reading, with offerings for both law enforcement (under the Vigilant Solutions brand) and commercial customers (as Digital Recognition Network) and the ability to . Greg Brown, chairman and CEO of Motorola Solutions, said at the time of the VaaS purchase that it would expand the company’s command center software portfolio “with the largest shareable database of vehicle location information that can help shorten response times and improve the speed and accuracy of investigations.”

Todd Hodnett, co-founder of VaaS and president of Digital Recognition Network, said that the companies’ license plate data and artificial intelligence technology were opening up new commercial applications of its products and that “commercialization of these new applications can be accelerated under the Motorola Solutions brand and reach.”

At the International Wireless Communications Expo last week, Motorola Solutions released a number of new products, from  PTT 9.0 for wireless carriers — which it described as offering “an extensive set of features compliant with the 3GPP [mission-critical push-to-talk] standard” — to a new body-worn camera and a mission-critical internet of things gateway for connecting IoT sensors, which also has a P25 two-way radio built in.
