Fixed wireless and mobile hotspots lead first wave of 5G

Inseego is enabling service provider and vertically-focused 5G investments

We’re in the early days of 5G with service providers immediately focused on providing an enhanced mobile broadband experience to consumers and, to a more limited extent, businesses. But, as networks scale and standards continue to evolve, eMBB will give way to massive support for the internet of things and mission critical communications highly-dependent on 5G’s ultra-low latency.

In the U.S. today, Verizon is offering a 5G fixed wireless home broadband service and recently announced plans for a mobile service launch beginning in Chicago and Minneapolis, which will respectively use Inseego’s 5G New Radio-based home routers and mobile hot spots , all powered by MiFi iQ technology, company Chairman and CEO Dan Mondor told RCR Wireless News during Mobile World Congress Barcelona.

Mondor said in addition to Verizon, Inseego is working in Australia with Telus and Optus and with about 20 other global service providers. “In our travels and engagements around the world, we’re finding some operators want to start off with the mobile hot spot applications as their initial 5G service offerings. Others are starting immediately with fixed wireless. It’s a very powerful solution set and…it’s their ability to compete with predominant broadband providers such as cable companies.”

During MWC Barcelona, Inseego worked with CloudMinds to demonstrate robotics powered by a cloud-based artificial intelligence connected over an RF link; and with Verizon, which is ramping up its public safety offerings, to showcase an augmented reality experience wherein a firefighter is able to see through smoke to rescue people inside a burning building, with less than 10 milliseconds of latency.

On the IoT and enterprise SaaS side, Inseego has seen significant traction in helping enterprises across multiple verticals including transportation, public safety, infrastructure, logistics and aviation make the most of their high-value assets. Combining sensors, connectivity and cloud computing, users can analyze real-time data to produce actionable insights that helps eliminate unscheduled downtime, decrease fleet-related expenses, increase asset visibility and utilization and otherwise reduce operational expenses.

Ashish Sharma, CMO and EVP of IoT and Mobile Solutions, said airlines KLM and Lufthansa among others are using Inseego’s aviation solutions. “That’s a great market for us,” he said. “We are enabling deep intelligence in high-value asset tracking within the airports and airlines.”

Aviation “really is in need of modernization to know where all these high-value assets are,” Mondor added, calling out actionable data on speed, battery life, fuel levels, turning radius and location. “There’s all kinds of intelligence that comes from that and the business case, the ROI…is amazing.”
