The number of certified Zigbee IoT products and platforms in the market for smart homes and cities has passed 3,000, according to the Zigbee Alliance.
The alliance’s certification programme seeks to establish quality standards and levels of interoperability among Zigbee products for product developers, service providers, and customers.
It said the 3,000th certified Zigbee product is the Amazon’s second generation Echo Show, which features a smart home hub to connect to Zigbee-based light bulbs, door locks, and sensors. Latest Zigbee 3.0 products are starting to gain certification, it said.
Jon Harros, director of certification and testing for the Zigbee Alliance, said: “Collaborating across brands and standards is what’s helping our market flourish as everyone wants choice and the ability to easily connect devices to one another. Our member companies work in different areas of the IoT realm yet come together to drive innovation and development. Each qualified product and platform further expands the interoperability universe for us all.”
Chris DeCenzo, principal engineer at Amazon and board director for the Zigbee Alliance, said: “Customers want smart home devices that are simple to setup, reliable, and work together seamlessly. By contributing to open standards and pursuing Zigbee certification for products including the 2nd Gen Echo Show, our goal is to help ensure customers can choose from a wide range of smart home devices and know that they’ll work great together.”
Zigbee Alliance board directors also include representatives from Comcast, Huawei, Landis+Gyr, NXP Semiconductors, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, Signify, and Texas Instruments. Companies that have been involved in brining Zigbee products to market in 2019 also include Qualcomm, Samsung, The Home Depot, and Toshiba, among others.
