Sprint has signed a strategic partnership with technology solutions provider CalAm to deliver intelligent telematics devices and software applications, along with CalAmp iOn Device-as-a-Service (DaaS) subscription services.
The relationship further expands Sprint’s range of connected car, fleet and asset management services for enterprise and business customers, the carrier said.
Through Sprint Curiosity IoT, a distributed and virtualized core network and operating system built for IoT, the carrier said that its customers and channel partners will be able to provision CalAmp devices, as well as leverage CalAmp software services to develop vertical market offerings.
Sprint expects to offer a supply chain intelligence solution, which will provide real-time visibility, environmental information and data analytics about goods in transit. These insights will enable manufacturers and transportation service providers to make informed decisions, secure assets and comply with regulations to improve overall supply chain efficiency, it said.

Through the agreement, CalAmp will develop intelligent telematics devices leveraging Sprint’s CAT-M wireless network to provide actionable insights from cars, trucks, trailers and other mobile assets. CalAmp iOn DaaS bundles a telematics device with access to a portfolio of connected car micro-services, such as CrashBoxx crash response and driver behavior scoring.
“Sprint’s Curiosity IoT platform establishes the perfect environment to expand access to our fleet management, supply chain and subscription-based services,” said Carl Burrow, senior vice president of global sales. “We see this relationship as much more than a product offering, but an avenue to develop solutions that enhance the customer experience and drive better business performance.”
Sprint said that when coupled with its 5G network, Curiosity’s IoT core network will be capable of supporting artificial intelligence, robotics, edge computing, autonomous vehicles and other IoT systems requiring extreme low-latency and high-bandwidth, the carrier said.
Sprint has already launched 5G service in Phoenix, Arizona, New York City, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Kansas City and Chicago. The carrier says that its total 5G footprint currently includes 2,100 square miles covering 11 million people in the U.S.
