Vodafone Spain ends March with 2.75 million IoT connections

Spanish operator Vodafone added a total of 518,165 IoT connections during its last fiscal year

Vodafone, owned by UK-based telecommunications group Vodafone, ended the fiscal year with 2.75 million active lines in Spain in the IoT segment, representing an increase of over 23% compared to the previous fiscal year.

In a statement, the company noted that it had experienced significant growth in the last quarter of its fiscal year with 150,000 new active IoT lines. ” Vodafone is positioned as the leading operator in the IoT market in Spain, with a market share of over 35%,” Vodafone said.

The telco also highlighted that Vodafone currently provides IoT solutions adapted to different sectors such as Health, Banking, Agriculture, Security, Tourism, Automotive and Public Administrations.

“Banking and Security are the two sectors with the highest growth in the number of IoT connections in the last year in Vodafone Business, with the segment of security companies accounting for the largest number of IoT connections.”

In January 2017, Vodafone Spain launched its commercial NB-IoT in the country. The cities where this technology was initially available were Madrid and Valencia, with subsequent expansions to cities including Barcelona, Bilbao, Málaga and Seville.

The carrier initially launched its IoT network within existing 800 MHz spectrum, with the telco only needing to make software updates in existing base stations in order to launch the technology.

Vodafone has already launched NB-IoT networks in the UK, Czech Republic; Germany; Greece; Ireland; Italy; Australia; Netherlands; South Africa; Spain and Turkey, among other markets.

Vodafone launches IoT-based heat detection camera in the UK

In related news, Vodafone UK, in partnership with Digital Barriers, recently  launched a heat detection camera to help UK organizations get back to work safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. The heat detection camera combines thermal imaging and Vodafone’s IoT connectivity to screen the temperature of people as they enter buildings.

It incorporates both thermal and HD cameras that deliver reliable, real-time body temperature screening accurate to within +/- 0.3 degrees Celsius. The solution can screen up to eight people at a time and 100 every minute.

Scott Petty, CTO, Vodafone UK, said: “The heat detection camera brings together Vodafone’s expertise in IoT with innovative technology and a secure managed service to create an enterprise-grade solution that protects employees and front-of-house staff. Our IoT network can connect many cameras quickly and without disruption in almost any location; and our ongoing partnership with Digital Barriers provides reassurance that the underlying software and hardware is engineered to the highest standards.”
