Tata Communications already has two centers of excellence (CoEs) in Delhi and Mumbai
Indian tech firm Tata Communications announced the launch of a dedicated private 5G global center of excellence (CoE) in Pune, India to accelerate Industry 4.0 applications and capabilities for enterprises.
Tata Communications said in a release that the new CoE is an indoor facility to test and trial industry use cases. The company has developed use cases across automotive, metals and mining, airports and seaports, manufacturing, logistics and healthcare sectors.
With trials underway, Tata Communications also noted that it will be able to demonstrate private 5G use cases such as automated quality inspection of equipment using video and image analytics, inventory management and asset tracking, warehouse theft detection, AR/VR-based remote worker collaboration and video-powered retail purchasing, among others.
Tata Communications also said it is following “robust measures”, including Interoperability tests to assess compatibility of the company’s private network with different devices and rigorous monitoring and testing to ensure stable connectivity throughout test duration at the CoE.
Mysore Madhusudhan, EVP of collaboration and connected solutions at Tata Communications, said: “Early test results in our global center of excellence have proved to be very positive providing an evolutionary path towards Industry 4.0 scenarios to varied industries. We believe this center is well poised to empower enterprises for a hyperconnected tomorrow.”
Tata Communications already operates two centers of excellence (CoEs) in Delhi and Mumbai that are focused on designing, building and demonstrating multiple Internet of Things (IoT) use cases. In these two facilities, Tata says it has successfully showcased several use cases of smart streetlights, connected workers, smart utility meters for water, gas and energy, asset tracking and temperature sensors, among others.
In August, local press reported that Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) was looking to help companies and organizations across different verticals to set up their 5G private networks.
Under local regulations, TCS can set up 5G private network for enterprises but cannot become a licensee or own spectrum. A company that intends to deploy a private network can lease out frequencies from a telecom operator or directly purchase the frequencies from the government.
Both Tata Communications and Tata Consultancy Services are owned by local conglomerate Tata Group.
In a previous spectrum auction carried out by the Department of Telecom (DoT), Adani Data Networks, which is a subsidiary of local conglomerate Adani Group, secured 400 MHz in the 26 GHz spectrum band becoming the first entity in India to purchase spectrum to deploy a 5G private network.
