Verizon private 5G to help Ohio clinic realize ‘fully digital’ vision

The private 5G network will enable use cases like patient check-in kiosks and assisted surgery and imaging, said Verizon

Verizon Business has deployed a private 5G network at the new Cleveland Clinic hospital in Mentor, Ohio. The network, based on an Ericsson platform, will help to improve patient care and the visitor experience, as well as support caregivers with greater connectivity, said the carrier.

The Cleveland Clinic Mentor Hospital is scheduled to open in July, and according to the facility’s CIO Matthew Kull, the long-term vision for the project is “fully digital.”

“If we can provide 5G high bandwidth to our facilities, we can become more efficient, ensure better continuity of care as patients transition home and enhance the overall experience for our caregivers and patients,” he continued.

Specifically, Verizon said the private 5G network will enable use cases like patient check-in kiosks, enhanced digital displays, in-room infotainment for patients, asset tracking and AR/VR adoption for clinician education, patient education, assisted surgery and imaging. The carrier noted that this final application will be part of the next iteration of the installation because it will require future 5G millimeter wave deployments.

The deal was facilitated through Verizon’s 5G alliance with KPMG LLP designed to help transform the healthcare and life sciences sectors. As part of this partnership, KPMG in February deployed a Verizon private 5G wireless network at its Ignition Center inside KPMG Lakehouse. At the time, Jennifer Artley, SVP for 5G acceleration at Verizon Business commented: “By bringing together Verizon’s 5G with KPMG’s deep industry experience and track record in improving business processes, we plan to deliver cutting-edge solutions that will close the gap between legacy hospital environments and digital business operations and unlock the value of the end-to-end digital enterprise.”
