America Movil expands 5G network to 104 Mexican cities

America Movil previously noted that 5G services are helping to increase the demand for postpaid mobile plans in Mexico

Mexican telecom group America Movil said it currently provides 5G services in 104 cities across Mexico.

The telco also announced the launch of 5G services for prepaid users. In a release, the Mexican carrier said that its more than 68 million prepaid users will now be able to access the company’s 5G network, which means that the benefits of the new technology will be available to more than 80 million Telcel customers.

America Movil had previously noted that 5G services are helping to increase the demand for postpaid mobile plans in the Mexican market. The company’s CEO Daniel Hajj previously said that the company was seeing a solid migration of users from 4G to 5G, which is increasing the telco’s Average Revenue Per User (ARPU).

In February last year, America Movil launched 5G services in 18 of Mexico’s largest cities, reaching more than 48 million people. The company, which operates in the mobile telephony segment through the Telcel brand, initially launched 5G in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Tijuana and Puebla, among other cities.

America Movil operates in at least 10 markets, mainly in Latin America. In Europe, the telco partially owns dutch telco KPN and Austrian operator Telekom Austria.

Rival operator AT&T Mexico offered its 5G services in 18 cities across the country as of the end of 2022. The operator’s 5G services are active in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, Mexicali, Ciudad Juárez, Mazatlan, Ciudad Obregon, Navojoa, Guasave, Ensenada, Puerto Penasco Guamuchil, Hemosillo, Culiacan, Saltillo, Torreon and Morelia.

The company’s Deputy Vice President of Execution and Transformation Carlos Torrealba previously said that 5G will account for most of the carrier’s mobile base in 3-5 years.

The carrier had initially launched 5G services in Mexico in December 2021 using spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band.

AT&T Mexico also previously opened a 5G Innovation Laboratory, a space designed to test and validate 5G use cases with collaborators, industry and customers. AT&T Mexico said it will work in collaboration with industry, government, universities, startups and large corporations, in the realization of prototypes that use 5G technology to improve business models.

Meanwhile, Movistar, owned by Spanish telecom group Telefonica, had launched 5G services in December 2022.

Movistar Mexico initially activated its 5G offering in Ciudad de Mexico, Culiacan and Hermosillo. The Mexican carrier said it expecting to launch 5G in 30 new cities across the country by March 2023.

Movistar is using AT&T’s network infrastructure for the provision of 5G in Mexico. Both telcos have had a network infrastructure-sharing agreement since 2019.
