Qatar Airways and Google Cloud strike data, AI partnership

The pair will also explore using cloud tools to address Qatar Airways’ sustainability goals

Qatar Airways has selected Google Cloud to help it decipher the large amount of data generated from its millions of passengers. Using Google’s data analytics, AI and machine learning (ML) solutions, the airline can improve the travel experience by providing personalized offerings, said the companies.

Further, Qatar Airways Chief Information Officer, A.T. Srinivasan said the collaboration also includes cloud service offerings to help the airline optimize its aircraft and airport operations in areas such as aircraft inventory, and more broadly, “deliver elasticity and scalability on demand.”

Srinivasan added: “We also look forward to collaborating with Google Cloud to try out some of their cutting-edge technology through this long-term partnership. The presence of a Cloud in Qatar gives us the assurance that our data stays in-country and we can focus on data and AI/ML led innovation without having to worry about data residency.”

Finally, the pair will also explore using cloud tools to address sustainability, which Qatar Airlines states is a “top priority” in its digital transformation roadmap. According to the airline, Google Cloud will help some of the programs outlined in its sustainability goals, such as a fuel optimization program and performance-based navigation, which requires identifying opportunities to reduce fuel burn during all flight phases.

Some of the specific solutions mentioned in the press release include BigQuery, Google’s serverless enterprise data warehouse and Vertex AI, a unified artificial intelligence platform that Google says offers all of its cloud services under one roof.

“Businesses today can make smart decisions in real time and provide personalised experiences to their customers through AI and machine learning tools. Qatar Airways is not only an airline that takes passengers from point A to point B, but also it is a manifestation of Qatari hospitality,” said Ghassan Kosta, Qatar Country Manager at Google Cloud.
