Samsung, NAVER Cloud deploy private 5G for Hoban Construction

Samsung Electronics and NAVER Cloud have expanded their collaboration to launch a private 5G network for Hoban Construction, a Korean company specializing in construction, property development and manufacturing. company.

The aim of the network is enable 5G-supported applications like drone-based, high-resolution monitoring for live site inspections, IoT concrete strength sensors, real-time CCTV video monitoring, smart safety jackets equipped with gas detection sensors and construction site management solutions.

The Vice President of Hoban Construction’s Management Division Kap Moon said the company looks forward to using the private 5G network to “enhance safety at our worksites, improve construction workflow and provide workers with real-time data to allocate resources and deliver better outcomes for our projects.”

Additionally, Samsung said in a release that the 5G applications being introduced will “streamline communications for human-to-human, machine-to-machine and human-to-machine interactions,” which will allow the construction company to improve on-site collaboration and better allocate resources.

“Our advanced network technology will help construction companies in expanding what’s possible, by bringing forth new tools and applications that will optimize their operations and improve safety on-site,” commented Yong Chang, vice president of global sales and marketing of Samsung’s Networks Business.

For the deployment, Samsung has provided outdoor radios, baseband units and its 5G Standalone Compact Core solution, all of support the mid-band (4.7GHz) spectrum dedicated to private 5G networks in Korea. For its part, NAVER Cloud has a license for private 5G-dedicated spectrum in Korea, which it then makes available to its enterprises customers.

“This collaboration with Samsung and Hoban Construction represents an exciting milestone in our efforts to bring 5G to various industries in Korea,” said Sang-young Han, executive director at NAVER Cloud Strategy and Planning. “As Korea’s first private 5G common carrier, we are confident that the benefits of private 5G networks will be transformative for the entire construction sector, and we look forward to showcasing these benefits to the wider industry.”

Last year, Samsung and NAVER Cloud jointly launched what the pair claimed was the first 5G private network in Korea. Deployed at NAVER’s new headquarters, the network supported cloud-based, autonomous mobile robots designed to deliver employee services throughout the building.
