Kagan: Huawei Pangu-Weather Model uses AI to improve global forecasting

The Huawei Pangu-Weather Model uses artificial intelligence to improve global weather forecasting. It is now used in the ECMWF, which is the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts website. Global weather forecasters, meteorologists, weather enthusiasts and the general public can now view the Pangu-Weather 10-day global forecast for free. This is the first time this technology is available to the public.

Over the years, thanks to new technology, weather forecasting has become more accurate. This has saved lives and property. And it continues to improve.

If you remember the movie “Back to the Future II” where Doc Brown sits with Marty in the DeLorean in the future and waits a few moments for the rain to stop, just as the forecast predicted.

While this could not be done in the 1980’s, it can be done today. Weather forecasting has gotten more accurate and now with this Pangu-Weather Model, it takes forecasting to an entirely new level.

Pangu-Weather Model accurately predicted trajectory of Typhoon Mawar

Developed by Huawei Cloud, this is the first AI weather prediction model to demonstrate higher precision than traditional forecast models.

Huawei says this allows a 10,000x improvement in prediction speed, reducing global weather prediction time to mere seconds. That’s impressive.

This shows the power of AI, the cloud and advanced technology. This model can predict in mere seconds, fine-grained meteorological features including humidity, wind speed, temperature and sea level pressure.

In fact, a few short months ago it had accurately predicted the trajectory of Typhoon Mawar.

This Pangu-Weather Model overcomes limits of existing 2D neural networks with 3D Earth-Specific Transformer architecture. This 3DEST processes complex, non-uniform 3D meteorological data more accurately and more quickly.

This has also reduced erroneous forecasts and improved precision of predictions for up to 7 days.

Huawei Cloud using AI to advance many industries

Huawei says their mission is “AI for all industries”. It looks like this Cloud Pangu model is set to revolutionize the industrial application of artificial intelligence in diverse areas such as weather forecasting, drug development, fault identification in trains and railroads, electric power, safe mining and more.

Many areas of scientific research including meteorological, marine, pharmaceutical and more are also benefiting from this advanced technology.

This should also advance weather dependent industries as well as aid in global disaster and preparation.

In the field of drug R&D, developing a new drug medicine can take an average of 10 years and a billion dollars.

Pangu Drug Molecule Model uses AI to reduce development time by 70%

The Pangu Drug Molecule Model accelerates lead compound discovery time from years down to just one month. This also reduces R&D costs by roughly 70%.

The benefits of this new technology seem astounding.

Huawei points to a team led by Professor Liu Bing of Xi/s an Jiaotong University recently discovered a new super antibiotic.

This is the first, new antibiotic to be discovered in 40 years. This has brand new protein targets and is in a category of its own.

This shows how we are entering an exciting new time of advancement which can help mankind in many different ways.

This Pangu Weather Model and the Pangu Drug Molecule Model are two of many different areas where this new technology will continue to advance and improve industries and lives going forward.
