Verizon debuts new mobile Network-as-a-Service vehicle

The solution is a 10-foot portable trailer that delivers a private network, private MEC, SD-Wan and satellite connectivity

Verizon’s Mobile Onsite Network-as-a-Service (NaaS), a 10-foot connected portable trailer, hit the streets around Lockheed Martin’s Waterton, Colorado campus this week. The vehicle delivers a private network, private mobile edge compute (MEC), SD-Wan and satellite connectivity to customer locations, providing scalable 5G and edge compute that can be managed locally by enterprise and public sector customers, said the operator.

“By delivering the mission critical connectivity that our network provides to customer locations, we are demonstrating how 5G and edge computing can help customers address their strategic priorities and continue to develop advanced solutions,” said Srini Kalapala, senior vice president for technology and product development at Verizon. “A private network on location delivers the high-speed, high-capacity, and low latency needed for various applications as well as greater privacy and security.”

Lockheed Martin is using the using the vehicle as a testing platform to ingest sensor data and video to show key performance indicators to assess network operations. Dan Rice, vice president of 5G.MIL Programs at Lockheed Martin, also said the trailer is a continuation of the company’s work with Verizon to further development of its 5G.MIL solutions, which integrate military communications with tactical gateway capabilities (“.MIL”) and 5G technology, is to deliver “prompt and decisive action on the battlefield.”

According to Lockheed Martin, 5G.MIL provides a new level of cohesion for DoD operations by bringing together high-tech platforms into a network spanning air, land, sea, space and cyber domains and enabling interoperability between 5G networks, NextG networks and operational DoD networks. While leveraging existing telecommunication infrastructure and technology, 5G.MIL creates a “network of networks” made up of military tactical, strategic and enterprise networks.

Verizon also said that the Mobile Onsite NaaS can be used as a Mobile Lab as a Service, as well, making it part of the carrier’s Innovation Labs’ offerings. Verizon has three Innovation Labs located in Boston, Los Angeles and most recently, San Francisco where customers can develop and test commercial and private 5G networks, NSA and IMS cores, multiple RF shielded rooms and a full private MEC.
