T-Mobile US tops for 5G speed in US market
5G speeds and availability continue to increase around the world, with regional leaps forward due to network launches in places like India. Testing and analysis company Ookla recently released new reports on 5G markets around the world that give a sense of how the technology is maturing.
Here is a selection of Ookla’s breakdown of the fastest mobile networks around the world, both across existing network technologies as well as on 5G networks specifically.
-In the U.S., T-Mobile US was the fastest mobile operator. Ookla clocked T-Mo’s network at a median download speeds of nearly 164 Mbps–more than twice the speed of its closest competitor, Verizon, at 75.68 Mbps. On 5G, T-Mo also recorded the fastest speeds by far: 221.57 Mbps.
-In China, China Mobile was the fastest mobile operator, registering a median download speed of nearly 180 Mbps across technologies; however, China Broadnet had the fastest median 5G speed among Chinese MNOs, at 297.59 Mbps. The fastest median mobile download speed was recorded in Beijing: 220.21 Mbps.
-SK Telecom had the fastest median download speeds in South Korea, at 174.80 Mbps; earlier this year, Ookla also said that SK Telecom leads the market in 5G speeds, with a median download speed of 531.89 Mbps. (However, it should be noted that South Korean MNOs have been fined by regulators about their network speed claims compared to actual performance, and Ookla found a “significant performance disparity” among 5G users.)
-In Germany, Deutsche Telekom won out in terms of providing the fastest speeds, with a median download speed of 91.53 Mbps; the carrier also had the top median 5G download speed, at 182.50 Mbps.
-Canada’s Bell was the fastest mobile operator both across technologies and in 5G specifically. The carrier’s overall median download speed was 100.77 Mbps; on 5G, it was 183.06 Mbps.
