Nokia gets private LTE/5G gig at Kingston Freeport Terminal, Jamaica

Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited (KFTL) has selected Nokia to deploy a private LTE/5G network at its container terminal in Kingston, Jamaica, in the Caribbean. The deployment has been handled by US-based system integrator EGC International. KFTL is taking both Nokia’s Digital Automation Cloud private networking solution, and its Mission Critical Industrial Edge (MXIE) private (edge) computing solution.

The network will support KFTL’s terminal operation system (TOS), including for cellular comms and connectivity for 100-odd vehicle mounted terminals (VMTs). The KFTL terminal in Jamaica serves Central America and the Caribbean, as well as markets on the east coast of North and South America, and vessels transiting the Panama Canal. Nokia said KFTL’s “digital transformation journey” is a “reference in the Americas”.

It suggested this is due to the “adoption of new technologies”, including its new DAC and MXIE installations. EGC International is deploying the Nokia gear to support the TOS, plus VMTs, cranes, and trucks. Around 100 tablets and 260 devices, running push-to-talk over LTE, will be deployed from the outset; “up to” 1,300 devices will be connected in due course, supporting remote operations and live monitoring of terminal equipment, said Nokia.

Marcelo Entreconti, director of Nokia’s enterprise business in Latin America, said: “We are very pleased to collaborate with KFTL to increase its regional competitiveness. Nokia solutions are key enablers for terminal productivity, efficiency and safety and security operational improvements. As the first private wireless network project in a Caribbean port, this deployment will benefit KFTL’s digitalisation journey.”

Carlos Cabrera, chief operating officer at KFTL, said: “We aim to go beyond our customers’ expectations in our service delivery. We are committed to continually improving our operations safely and keeping innovation as part of our DNA. Nokia’s LTE and 5G private wireless network is a key component of KFTL’s strategy to drive endpoint productivity and security.”

Victor Agnellini, chief executive at EGC International, said: “We are excited to join forces with Nokia to deliver a new era of connectivity at KFTL. Our commitment to innovation aligns perfectly with Nokia’s expertise for cutting-edge networking solutions. This partnership will empower the terminal with advanced technology, optimising operations and ensuring seamless communication for all stakeholders.”
