Apple will also withhold iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay Screen Sharing in the EU this year
Due to regulatory concerns relating to the European Parliament’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple has said it will withhold the release of generative AI (gen AI) tools like its Apple Intelligence feature across the European Union (EU).
In addition, Apple will also not release iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay Screen Sharing in the EU this year.
Apple told Bloomberg that it is concerned specifically about the interoperability requirements of the DMA, saying they may “force” the company to “compromise the integrity of [its] products in ways that risk user privacy and data security.”
“We are committed to collaborating with the European Commission (EC) in an attempt to find a solution that would enable us to deliver these features to our EU customers without compromising their safety,” Apple continued.
The DMA rules were first released by European Commission EVP Margrethe Vestager in December 2020, and were designed to “tackle the spread of illegal content, online disinformation and other societal risks.”
The DMA was passed two years later in 2022. Non-compliance with these regulations, stated the EC, could result in fines of up to 10% of a company’s global turnover, with the potential to rise to 20% for repeat infringements.
