For two decades, Communications Services Providers have managed customer premises equipment (CPE) via the Broadband Forum’s TR-069 protocol. Today, there are around 1 billion broadband devices managed via that protocol—a massive number by any stretch. But there is now an enhanced option for CPE management: the TR-369 protocol, which is being implemented into 5G Fixed Wireless Access and other new broadband devices.
Why are CPE devices migrating to TR-369? It enables a broader scope for the CPE-focused protocol, in that it can be used via the standard CSP network rather than a unique, secured network; it also offers the opportunity for third parties, such as home security or electric utilities, to potentially access remote monitoring devices. But perhaps most significantly, TR-369 operates in real time. For example, if a customer calls in with Wi-Fi issues, a customer service agent can access real-time information on what is happening in the home network in terms of attached devices and network topology, to assist in troubleshooting.
So how do CSPs ensure that they can best support either the existing TR-069 or the new TR-369 protocol? The best option, of course, is to have a platform that supports both. TR-069 isn’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future, but the advantages of TR-369 mean that it is seeing increasing device integration and adoption.
Nokia’s Corteca Cloud platform provides the bridge between those two CPE management protocols, with a future-proof path and simplified operations at scale. Nokia recently announced the addition of Corteca Cloud support for more than 410 TR-069-based, legacy broadband devices, cementing its position as a comprehensive platform provider for the long transition to TR-369, while enabling efficient management for both new and legacy in-home Wi-Fi devices on the same platform.
“Service providers need a practical path to the future, not a forced transition,” said Justin Doucette, head of Wi-Fi and Software within the Fixed Networks segment at Nokia. “By supporting both TR-069 and TR-369, Nokia Corteca Cloud gives operators the flexibility to manage today’s networks while preparing for what’s next— without disruption. Our solution provides a smooth evolution path and a single cloud platform for seamless visibility and control.”
Nokia recognizes that CSPs will need to handle a mix of TR-069 and TR-369 devices for years to come, and that CSPs require flexibility and operational simplicity as they manage the transition of their device base. Corteca Cloud, along with the dual TR-069 and TR-369 protocol support, enables features including automated Wi-Fi monitoring to proactively resolve issues, as well as remote operations to reduce the need for on-site visits—both of which reduce operational support costs. And with TR-369, CSPs can also install and uninstall new, value-added services, like cybersecurity and gaming optimization, on broadband devices.
More than 90 CSPs around the world already depend on Corteca Cloud to provide comprehensive, smart broadband device management solutions.
