With physical stores increasingly coming into competition with online retailers, it seems almost inevitable that one would begin to borrow from the other.
A good example is N3L Optics, a high-end sunglasses store in Hillsdale Mall, San Mateo, CA, which is bringing in-store shopping to the cloud.
The store has what it calls a “smart mirror,” which, at first glance, looks like any old reflective surface. But press the right button and it allows customers to photograph themselves in their ultra-cool new glasses and e-mail it off to friends and life partners.
N3L says it’s also working on connecting the system to Facebook and Twitter.
Mirror, mirror on the wall
When this reporter tried out the smart mirror, it did in fact make the shopping experience much more fun.
I put on a pair of spectacles that made me look like Kanye West and e-mailed a snapshot off to a few contacts. Right away I got text messages back telling me I looked like an idiot, but that the glasses fit my personality.
That’s real-time feedback at its best.

N3L Optics has only six locations nationwide, including stores in Colorado, Florida, and Texas.
