Qualcomm licenses CDMA technology to Egyptian company

SAN DIEGO-The Egyptian Telephone Co. will develop, manufacture and distribute cdmaOne and CDMA2000 1x/1x EV-DO technology under an agreement with Qualcomm Inc.

The pact grants ETC a license to deploy Qualcomm technology in Egypt, the Middle East and North Africa. The carrier will pay royalties at Qualcomm’s standard worldwide rates, which are uniform irrespective of the CDMA standard sold.

“It will be critical for ETC to have the ability to provide CDMA solutions that support the need for advanced voice and data communications in the Middle East and Africa,” said Sherif Hamed, ETC’s chief operations officer. “Through our licensing agreement with Qualcomm, we can now offer consumers products with high-quality capabilities and features that will enrich their wireless experience.”

ETC has installed more than 800,000 subscriber lines in Egypt, Iraq and Algeria since it was privatized from the Egyptian government in 2000.
