SCHAUMBURG, Ill.-Motorola Inc. hired a new head for its CDMA handset business, a move that could help solidify the company’s strong position in the North American mobile-phone industry.
Teresa Vega will serve as the corporate vice president of Motorola’s Mobile Devices Business, heading the company’s global CDMA organization, and will report directly to Ron Garriques, executive vice president and president of Motorola’s Mobile Devices Business.
“Terry’s extensive experience in telecom and wireless brings Motorola deep CDMA industry and customer knowledge, along with a strong technical competency,” Garriques said. “Terry helped launch the first CDMA networks in the mid-1990s for Sprint, SKT and Verizon, among others.”
Vega previously worked as group president of wireless, cable and emerging markets for Telcordia Technologies, which supplies software solutions for network management and operations. She also worked with Lucent Technologies Inc. in its AMPS, CDMA and TDMA businesses.
Motorola enjoyed a leading 34.2-percent market share in the first quarter of this year in the North American handset market, according to research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics. CDMA carrier Verizon Wireless, the country’s second-largest wireless operator, carries a range of Motorola handsets.
