Google announced this week that it would be ceasing its online only sale strategy for its Nexus phone in favour of retail based sales.
Say what you will about Google’s Android powered uber phone, but there has always been one mega downside to it, and that’s that it was only available for purchase through the firm’s online store.
What the mighty Google seemingly overlooked until now was the simple fact that the majority of punters actually want to play with the phone in stores before laying out their hard earned cash on a device that will generally be with them 24/7.
One could even go as far as concluding that Google’s online-only strategy was the major contributing factor in the dismally low sales of the Nexus One. After all, who in their right mind is going to go out and plonk down $500+ of their hard earned cash on a device they have never held first?
Now that the great Goog has finally caught on to this ‘minor’ oversight in strategy before launching the Nexus One globally, one can only hope it increases sales of the phone.
It may, however, be a case of too little too late, with the Nexus One due to face fierce competition within the handset market and more specifically against other Android  handsets such as the HTC Desire, better specced Droid Incredible or the soon to be launched HTC Sprint EVO 4G.
One thing is for sure though, while it may already be too late for the new strategy to save Nexus One sales, Google has already won the bigger battle thanks to Android.
