N.C.PROGRESSES ON PUBLIC-SAFETY NETWORK

RALEIGH, N.C.-The state of North Carolina completed the first phase of the installation of a statewide public-safety mobile data network provided by Motorola Inc.

The North Carolina Criminal Justice Information Network/Mobile Data Network will be implemented during the next four years in four phases. The data network will allow state and local agencies to use wireless packet data technology, said Motorola.

“We expect the data units will save about .5 hours per accident that troopers spend daily on collecting and assimilating accident data,” said First Sergeant Woody Sandy, Information Management Unit, North Carolina State Highway Patrol. “This translates into more time available for preventive patrol.

“In 1995, State Highway Patrol troopers investigated about 119,000 accidents,” continued Sandy. “Using a statewide mobile data system today, the State Patrol would realize a savings of about 28 man-years of administrative work.”
