MUNICH, Germany-Bangladesh mobile operator Banglalink, a 100-percent subsidiary of Orascom Telecom, has commissioned Siemens AG to set up its GSM network in Bangladesh. Siemens will install turnkey radio and switching systems to Banglalink for up to 3 million subscribers under a two-year frame contract valued at $50 million.
“Our objective is to make mobile communication affordable for the people of Bangladesh, and we have opted for Siemens technology so that we can provide reliable communication and cost-effective solutions to our subscribers. Our expectations and demands are high, but we believe Siemens will master the challenges well,” said Lars P. Reichelt , chief executive officer of Banglalink.
Bangladesh currently has around 5 million subscribers nationwide, and market watchers predict a rise of up to 20 million subscribers by 2007, said Siemens.
