Sprint PCS said when it launches its wireless Web services in late September, customers could have access to the Internet in as fast as five to seven seconds.
3Com Corp. is providing a patent-pending network feature called QuickNetConnect to Sprint PCS’ network. The technology bypasses the public switched telephone network, providing customers direct digital access to the Internet and corporate intranets. This is expected to minimize toll charges and network set-up time.
3Com’s equipment connects directly to wireless switches to provide the interworking and protocol conversion required to deliver circuit-switched data capabilities to mobile data users. 3Com introduced the QuickNetConnect technology last October as part of its Code Division Multiple Access solutions. The solution is part of the company’s Total Control multiservice access platform, which offers telecommunications carriers and service providers a networking solution that includes support for remote access, carrier-grade Internet Protocol telephony, IP fax, virtual private networking and other converged voice, video and data applications.
3Com declined to name other operators using the feature.
“We have various partnerships and OEM agreements with other infrastructure providers that are taking this product global,” said Ben Cardwell, director of wireless product management with 3Com Carrier Systems.
