Virginia Transportation Dept. chooses U.S. Wireless solution

SAN RAMON, Calif.-How can California-based U.S. Wireless Corp. help traffic congestion in Virginia? By supplying its location-enhanced digital traffic and congestion information to the Virginia Department of Transportation as part of the Hampton roads Advanced Traveler Information System Public Private Partnership.

The location-enhanced traffic information will monitor the flow of cellular traffic in the Hampton Roads/Virginia Beach area, which in turn enables a variety of intelligent transportation services including traffic monitoring, location-sensitive traveler updates and alerts, and statistical and real-time “best route” information.

The state awarded the contract to a team lead by Iteris Inc., which brings together five leading companies in the area of traffic data collection, fusion and dissemination, including U.S. Wireless, Iteris, Cox Interactive Media, Metro Networks and Etak.

“We are delighted to be working with Iteris, a recognized leader in the Intelligent Transportation Systems industry,” said Dr. Oliver Hilsenrath, president and chief executive officer of U.S. Wireless. “U.S. Wireless is at the forefront of a new technological era in highway traffic control and management, which should lead to an explosion of new business in the U.S. and abroad.”

Hilsenrath also noted the agreement with Virginia comes on the heels of a similar contract with Maryland’s State Highway Administration.
