MapInfo Corp. introduced MapXtend, an extension of MapInfo’s Java-based MapXtreme software that will enable organizations to deliver real-time data to workers in the field.
“Up until now, the vast majority of our clients have run their systems on Windows or Unix platforms. This is the first time that we’ve written a solution that runs on a Palm or PDA device,” said Aileen Heal, marketing director for telecommunications at MapInfo.
Using MapXtend, field workers can view, edit, update and save the latest information. By displaying this information on interactive maps that link back to centralized databases, field workers can better assess situations, deliver the right service solutions and update the data, MapInfo said.
The software also can support thousands of field workers and allow for multiple concurrent users.
“We see any organization that has a large field force as one that can use this product. We see the telecommunications industry as early adopters,” said Heal.
MapInfo has strong telecommunications partnerships, and many of these companies have been looking for the applications that MapXtend provides, said Barbara Pilliod, director of corporate communications and public relations at MapInfo.
MapXtend is still in trials, but a commercial product should be available in three to six months.
“MapInfo is very committed to wireless now. We believe that the next step in the Internet is wireless,” said Pilliod.
