TOKYO-Japan’s NTT DoCoMo said it may limit its wildly popular iMode wireless Internet service due to capacity problems. There were 5 million iMode users in mid-March, making DoCoMo the largest Internet service provider in the country.
The service, which allows users to access more than 7,000 Internet sites and offers e-mail, games and online banking services, has been disrupted several times since its launch in February 1999.
Reuters reported DoCoMo is looking into ways to boost its infrastructure capacity and could suspend advertising the service. Another alternative is to limit current DoCoMo wireless subscribers from switching to iMode handsets.
DoCoMo has applied for a third-generation license in Japan and plans to begin 3G services next year.
