REDWOOD CITY, Calif.-Brazilian mobile operator Global Telecom licensed Phone.com Inc.’s UP.Link Server Suite to provide Wireless Application Protocol-based wireless Internet access to subscribers through its Code Division Multiple Access network.
Global Telecom, which covers states in Parana and Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, is a consortium developed and supported by DDI, Motorola Inc., Inepar, Nissho Iwai Corp. and Suzano.
“Our agreement with Phone.com allows us to be one of the first providers of wireless Internet access in Latin America,” said Yuji Tsuda, president and chief executive officer of Global Telecom. “We now have a major competitive advantage over our Brazilian competitors. In addition, we expect to double our subscriber base this year, and, given that growth potential, we were eager to include wireless Internet access among our range of services.”
In addition, Phone.com, in a partnership with Unisys Corp., delivered a turnkey WAP solution based on Unisys e-@ction value added services solutions to Polish mobile operator PTK Centerel.
“The collaboration between Unisys and Phone.com puts PTK Centertel in a leadership position in delivering wireless services to meet its customers’ most pressing information access and e-business needs,” explained Darrel Jennings, head of Unisys Global Communications Industry.
