Symbian said nine new phones based on Symbian OS-from Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Panasonic and Nokia-started shipping during the quarter, making a total of 48 different phones equipped with Symbian OS currently shipping. Twelve of the 48 are designed for third-generation networks, said Symbian.

Cumulative shipments of Symbian OS phones now stand at 32 million, said the company.

Symbian also said its board of directors is expected to make an announcement soon about the appointment of a new chief executive officer.
