WILMINGTON, Del.-The Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG) established a code of conduct for e-mail companies, Internet service providers and wireless carriers, outlining guidelines to prevent spam.
The group adopted principles encouraging operators to hold customers accountable to an “acceptable use policy” that defines permissible and prohibited uses of e-mail. MAAWG also said messaging providers should confer with each other on abuse issues to address implementation of protective measures.
“As messaging operators we stand united to discourage the practice of sending unsolicited bulk e-mail,” said Charles Stiles, America Online postmaster and co-chair of MAAWG’s Collaboration Committee. “This code of conduct serves as common ground to ensure we are all operating under the same set of principles.”
More than 70 companies, including Cingular Wireless, EarthLink, America Online, Yahoo! and Verizon, are members of the industry association.
