REDMOND, Wash.—AT&T Wireless said it completed the first phase of enhancements to its New York area network designed to increase calling capacity and improve service quality. The carrier said the enhancements were part of a multi-vendor network equipment strategy unveiled two years ago for a number of its high-growth, high-use North American markets.
The improvements included the installation of 13 new switches, the replacement of base stations at more than 1,040 cell sites and a new transport network.
“In a matter of months, we totally replaced our previous equipment with a new high-performing network that is scalable to support future growth, standardized and on a modular platform,” explained Mohan Gyani, president of AT&T Wireless Mobility Services.
AT&T Wireless said the improvements were in place prior to the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and helped the carrier deal with the dramatic increase in voice traffic following the events.
