FTC report finds government guidance needed in m-commerce

WASHINGTON—A new Federal Trade Commission staff report concludes more government guidance may be necessary to supplement self-regulation of wireless privacy, security and advertising in the infant mobile commerce sector.

“Additional guidance could help to ensure that the methods used by companies to provide notice and choice to consumers are clear and conspicuous. … Further, companies may want such additional guidance as they seek concrete and practical ways to fulfill the guidelines’ general standards” of wireless firms, stated the FTC staff report.

The FTC held a workshop in December 2000 on emerging consumer issues associated with wireless Internet applications.

The mobile-phone industry is seeking approval from the Federal Communications Commission for a consumer opt-in approach to location-based mobile commerce.
