Pakistan’s Ufone to upgrade to GPRS

NEW DELHI, India—Pak Telecom Mobile Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of Pakistan Telecommunications Corporation offering GSM 900 MHz services under the Ufone brand in Pakistan, announced an expansion plan, including migration to General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).

The expansion is in response to Pakistan’s accelerating demand for mobile services and will raise Ufone’s capacity to 370,000 subscribers, from the present level of 100,000, company officials stated in Islamabad. The service is currently available in 15 cities.

The company has awarded Nortel Networks a contract estimated to be worth US$60 million to implement the expansion plan. The expansion includes a GPRS solution, which will enable Ufone to offer consumers wireless Internet access, e-commerce, virtual private networking and other value-added mobile multimedia services.

“Ufone has experienced unbelievably strong growth since its launch in January of 2001 and now requires a more than four-fold capacity increase for its network,” said Arshad Khan, chief executive officer (CEO) of Ufone.
