MELBOURNE, Australia—For the first time, there are more mobile phones in Australia than there are fixed telephone lines, the Australian Communications Authority announced in its recently released annual report.
According to the report, there are 11.1 million mobile-phone subscribers in the country—the number is up 25 percent since July 2001—compared with 10.9 million fixed-phone customers. Prepaid services comprised one-third of all mobile customers.
The boost in mobile subscribers has, in part, resulted from improved coverage, more competitive pricing and greater choice of services.
