New tariffs in Pakistan from 1 May

NEW DELHI, India—It will cost less to make calls over mobile networks in Pakistan beginning 1 May.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reduced the airtime ceiling from 6.50 rupees (US$0.11) to 5.75 rupees (US$0.10) per minute. Calling charges from fixed to mobile phones have been reduced from 3.68 rupees (US$0.06) to 3.22 rupees (US$0.05) per minute.

Announcing the new tariff on Wednesday, PTA Chairman Shahzada Alam Malik said the new tariffs will continue for the next two years, and the decision was taken with consensus among all cellular companies operating in Pakistan. He said the number of subscribers in Pakistan is projected to reach 1 million by the end of the current year. Efforts are being made to reduce activation charges and taxes on prepaid and postpaid cards for the benefit of consumers.
