Verizon launches GPS handset

BEDMINSTER, N.J.—Verizon Wireless is launching another global positioning system-enabled handset, the company announced.

The 9155-GPX from Audiovox Communication Corp. will be available this week in addition to the SCH-N300 from Samsung, which has been available since December.

Although the phones are available to all Verizon Wireless customers, the company has deployed Phase II in only a few locations in the country where the local public safety answering points and local exchange carrier equipment has been upgraded. York County, Va., and the state of Rhode Island have been upgraded to support Phase II, and St. Clair County and Cook County, Ill., and Lake County, Ind., are using an interim network solution. Verizon Wireless deployed infrastructure but has yet to activate Phase II in Chicago, St. Louis and Harris County, Texas.

Verizon Wireless also announced that Intrado Inc. in Boulder, Colo., will work with Verizon during the next five years to help implement E911. Verizon Wireless said it will use Intrado’s Phase I and Phase II services to provide PSAPs with location and identification information.
