94.9% of Japanese youth own mobile phones

TOKYO—According to a survey conducted by the Cabinet Office, 94.9 percent of Japanese under 30 years old have their own mobile phones.

The government conducted the annual survey of 1,300 single households regarding the possession of durable consumer goods as of March 31.

According to the survey, 94.9 percent of people younger than 30 years old had their own mobile phones, which exceeded refrigerators (91.7 percent) and PCs (50.2 percent). The Japanese mobile-phone possession rate decreases according to age: 67.4 percent of the age bracket between 30 – 59 year old have a mobile phones, and 14.7 percent of those aged 60 years old or older have mobile phones.

For the whole population, 50.3 percent have mobile phones.
