JOHANNESBURG, South Africa—Ericsson said it has rolled out a mobile network in the remote northwestern area of Tanzania to link three major refugee camps to the outside world. The network, a joint venture with Tanzanian operator Mobitel, went live this month.
It connects Kigoma, Kasulu and Ngaraganza in the Kogoma region to Mobitel’s GSM network and will provide voice and data communications to relief workers and non-governmental organizations. The region is home to thousands of refugees from neighboring countries. Mobitel has agreed to charge reduced rates for humanitarian organizations in the region.
