Tauzin, Upton tell Bush to protect telecom infrastructure if WorldCom goes bankrupt

WASHINGTON-Reps. Billy Tauzin (R-La.), chairman of the House Commerce Committee, and Fred Upton (R-Mich.), chairman of the House telecommunications subcommittee, urged President George W. Bush on July 5 to protect the telecom infrastructure if WorldCom Inc. goes bankrupt.

“We urge that all necessary steps should be taken to ensure that our nation’s telecommunications infrastructure and consumers are protected from disruptions in service and degradation of service quality. . The [House Commerce] Committee wants to ensure that WorldCom consumers will be protected from potential disruption in service and degradation in service quality and that the telecommunications infrastructure is protected. We cannot afford to be anything less than vigilant and proactive in our efforts,” said Tauzin and Upton.

Copies of the letter were also sent to Michael Powell, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Stephen Perry of the General Services Administration, Tom Ridge, director of homeland security, and Hardwick Simmons, chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market Inc.
