MELBOURNE, Australia-Telstra continues to expand its two-way satellite Internet service to residents in a further eight extended call zones, a move welcomed this week by the federal Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston.
The ongoing satellite Internet initiative, part of the government’s A$150 million (US$81.2 million) untimed local calls project, aims to upgrade about 40,000 customer services in Australia’s remote extended call zones. In this way, the Telstra service not only aims to provide fast, always-on Internet connections to rural users, but also at a comparable price to metropolitan customers.
Remotely located homes and businesses must have an existing, or ordered, telephone number in a nominated call zone to be eligible. Orders made prior to 13 September receive free satellite equipment and installation.
