JOHANNESBURG, South Africa-South African mobile network operator MTN claimed it has paid back more than US$370,000 in funds to prepaid subscribers since the relaunch in June of it payback incentive scheme. The paybacks include monthly “pay backs” received by subscribers in airtime and short message service (SMS) fees for subscribers who have registered for the bonus reward scheme.
The bonus scheme is reported to be a two-tiered reward system whereby a daily free SMS is rewarded for making a call to another MTN number, and a high-use bonus is designed to reward subscribers who consume a lot of airtime on a monthly basis.
Donovan Smith, general manager, consumer marketing at MTN, said, “We are currently the only cellular operator in South Africa to reward prepaid users, and these packages are a result of extensive research into the needs of our consumers. The uptake has been extremely successful, and within the first month, uptake was over 70 percent more than originally envisaged.”
