NEW YORK-Reuters expanded its mobile offerings with a free news service that will deliver text and photos to wireless users in the United Kingdom and the United States.
The news agency will provide the top 10 news stories and images from its 200 worldwide bureaus, updating the stories throughout the day. The offering is available on 70 Web-enabled handsets from LG Electronics, Motorola, Siemens, Panasonic, Sharp and Sony Ericsson, and can be downloaded over the phone by typing in mobile.reuters.com.
The move is Reuters’ latest effort to target wireless users. Nearly 60,000 U.S. subscribers currently access Reuters news on mobile phones and personal digital assistants through a service powered by AvantGo.
“As information and images on mobile phones become more popular, there is a real opportunity for a news brand like Reuters to expand our reach in the United States,” said Stephen Smyth, vice president of Reuters Media. “By putting the power of our global news operation directly into the hands of consumers, we offer them the chance to be the first to know the breaking news stories and images making headlines at home and around the world.”
