Java Community Process members outline wireless Java road map

SANTA CLARA, Calif.-A range of big-name wireless players within the Java Community Process released what they call the road map for dealing with Java technology within the wireless industry, specifications they say will unify and harmonize the various iterations of Java currently in use in wireless.

Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java technology allows wireless users to download applications and run them on their devices. In the Java Community Process, various companies can propose modifications to the technology.

The effort to develop a road map for Java, which participants have dubbed the Java Technology for the Wireless Industry initiative, seeks to unify all the various iterations of Java that are used in the wireless industry. A number of specifications relating to mobile devices-such as CLDC 1.0 and MIDP 2.0 and extensions such as the Wireless Messaging API and Mobile Media API-have been introduced, but there has so far been no formal way to unify and use these sets of specifications. The Java wireless industry initiative seeks to combine those varied technology efforts into one road map for wireless.

Motorola, Nokia, Research In Motion, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, Sun Microsystems, Symbian, T-Mobile, Vodafone and 4thPass were among the companies participating in the effort. The first part of the initiative involves the publication of the basic road map for Java in wireless; in the second quarter of this year, the companies expect to finalize the specification and impose interoperability requirements.

The first range of devices using the specification is expected to become available in the fall of this year.

RCR Wireless News reported in December on the industry’s effort to create a road map.
