WASHINGTON-T-Mobile USA reportedly plans to drop enhanced observed time difference (EOTD) technology as its solution for implementing Phase II enhanced 911 service.
T-Mobile’s deployments of the technology had been one of the few bright spots for EOTD during a time when its other major U.S. carrier supporters, AT&T Wireless Services and Cingular Wireless, backed away from the technology.
In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, T-Mobile said after careful consideration it has elected to implement a network-based time difference of arrival (TDOA) system rather than continuing with EOTD deployments. The company cited AT&T’s and Cingular’s move away from the technology as a factor.
The company said it would not immediately discontinue its current EOTD operations but will transition them later under its TDOA deployment plan.
