LONDON-U.K. telecom regulator Oftel said it supports proposals calling for U.K. mobile operators to reduce the prices of calling mobile phones. However, in some relief for third-generation license holders, Oftel said the regulations would not affect the 3G market.
Oftel has proposed three annual cuts of about 15 percent during the next three years. The reductions are in line with recommendations from the Competition Commission earlier this year. However, Oftel was required to carry out a new review under the terms and procedures of implementing new European Commission directives by July 25.
“Oftel believes that measures are needed to require the mobile operators to reduce their call termination charges, which should result in cheaper calls to mobile phones,” said David Edmonds, director general of telecommunications for Oftel. “In line with Oftel’s earlier commitments, we do not intend to place any regulation on the 3G market. These are new and innovative services, and inappropriate regulations at this stage could damage the evolution of this new market.”
The consultation period ends July 24.
