KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa.-InterDigital Communications Corp. said its subsidiary InterDigital Technology Corp. has extended its 1998 patent license agreement with Sharp Corp. of Japan covering sales of terminal devices compliant with TDMA-based PDC and PHS standards.
Sharp will make a “multi-million dollar” payment to ITC to extend the agreement, and ITC will receive royalties for each PHS and PDC terminal unit product sold by Sharp worldwide through 2008.
Sharp and ITC also have a separate royalty-bearing patent license agreement covering handsets, modules and communications cards built to 2G/2.5G GSM/GPRS, 2G IS-95 and 3G CDMA standards.
ITC also signed a patent license agreement with Research In Motion Ltd. covering wireless terminal units built to GSM/GPRS/EDGE standards. Under the agreement, ITC will receive royalties for each licensed product sold by RIM worldwide.
“Our success in licensing our patented inventions across a broad range of mobile wireless products and manufacturers affirms the essentiality of our patents, and the competitive importance of our technology for the mobile wireless market,” said William Merritt, president of ITC.
