SALT Forum adds graphics technology to speech specs

BOSTON-The SALT Forum, a standards group aimed at promoting the use of speech technologies in multimodal and telephony systems, announced it combined new graphics technology with its speech interface specifications. The group said the move will allow developers to further enhance the user experience with interactive spoken interfaces coupled directly to a phone’s visual interface.

Under the specifications, SALT said it will use the World Wide Web Consortium’s Scalable Vector Graphics markup language as part of its SALT 1.0 specification. SVG is an XML-based language for describing advanced graphics that enable developers to deliver a visually rich user interaction experience in their Web applications.

“SALT seamlessly adds new speech capabilities to the versatility of SVG that enhance its capacity to make Web applications more powerful and easier to develop,” said Antoine Quint, SVG consultant for Fuchsia Design and co-author of the SVG specification. “Graphics and speech play complementary roles in making information readily accessible no matter what the situation may be.”
