PALO ALTO, Calif.-Danger Inc. said it will include Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Java 2 Micro Edition application download technology in its Hiptop wireless device platform, which forms the basis for T-Mobile USA Inc.’s Sidekick wireless phone.
The move is notable as the Danger Hiptop platform is already based around Sun’s Java technology, although not the J2ME iteration of Java. Now, through Danger’s licensing agreement with Sun, Hiptop users will be able to download J2ME applications over the air to their devices. J2ME has become a major force in the wireless industry, with a range of carriers and handset makers supporting the application technology.
“We look forward to making the Hiptop Development Platform available to the millions of Java developers, so that we can harness their creativity and offer the most interesting selection of content and services,” said John Arledge, Danger’s vice president of business development.
