Nokia offers figures from MMS trial

ESPOO, Finland-Nokia Corp. reported the results of a multimedia messaging trial it conducted with five wireless operators in Europe and the Asia-Pacific, figures the company said offer evidence that the market for mobile data services will grow to $212 billion by 2007.

Nokia said it conducted the MMS services trial in conjunction with sports marketing company IMG/TWI. CSL in Hong Kong, DTAC in Thailand, MobileOne and StarHub in Singapore, and MmO2 in the United Kingdom participated in the trial, which included sports-related MMS content.

“This project has clearly demonstrated the value of MMS for sports content services,” said Mark Selby, head of the mobile division for IMG/TWI. “When linked with SMS and WAP, MMS enables comprehensive, timely and exciting content to be consumed by sports fans. Mobile data services can now genuinely deliver the emotion of sport and generate new income for mobile operators.”
